How to play Platedle
Every day Platedle shows a real US license plate with the state name taped over. Your job: name the state in six tries.
Start close, zoom out
The plate starts zoomed in on a small detail: a corner of a picture, a slice of colour, part of a slogan. Every wrong guess zooms out a little, so you see more of the plate with each try.
Distance and direction
After each wrong guess you see how many miles your state is from the right one and an arrow pointing the way. The map colours your guesses from cold blue (far away) to deep red (next door), so you can close in.
Use every clue
Plates are full of hints: state slogans like "Live Free or Die" or "Famous Potatoes", pictures of mountains, arches, lighthouses and peaches, and colour schemes you may remember from road trips. Anything that spells out the state, such as its name, website or county, is under the tape.
The tape comes off
When you find the state, or run out of tries, the tape peels off and you see the whole plate. Then share your result: one square per guess, coloured by how close it was, with no spoilers.
Old and new plates
Platedle mixes current designs with older ones you can still spot on the road. There are 98 plates from all 50 states so far.
